What can go wrong?
Three things, in roughly this order of likelihood:
- The diamond does not match its certificate. Someone swaps a cheaper stone into the original setting after the certificate was issued. The paper looks legitimate. The diamond is not.
- The certificate is fake or altered. Photocopied reports, edited PDFs, or counterfeit certificates from invented labs.
- The ring was misrepresented. Listed as a 1.5ct stone but actually 1.3ct. Listed as VS1 clarity but actually SI2. Small but expensive discrepancies.
How to make sure you are safe
You want two layers of verification before any pre-owned diamond reaches you:
Layer 1: A real GIA or IGI certificate
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) are the two most trusted diamond grading laboratories in the world. A genuine GIA or IGI report is independently verifiable through the lab's online report checker. You enter the report number and the diamond's exact specs come up.
If a seller cannot produce a verifiable report number — or insists on "in-house certification" from a lab you have never heard of — walk away.
Layer 2: Independent inspection before delivery
This is what most buyers miss. A genuine GIA report only proves the stone was certified at some point. It does not prove the stone in this seller's hand right now matches that report.
